What's on offer and what does it cost?

Proofreading
- Correcting grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalisation errors;
- Highlighting issues of clarity, overall flow or inconsistencies in the text;
- Ensuring adherence to a specified style guide;
- Focusing on:
- Homonyms – words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings;
- Verb tenses, sentence structure, word contractions and apostrophes;
- Tone, jargon, repetitive words, misused words, idioms;
- Data and Image Attributions. Note, this will be commented on if missing, but the reference will not be added or checked;
- Line and word spacing and typographical style.
- Copy editing (see descriptions elsewhere);
- Formatting and layout;
- Correcting references (available as an extra);
- Plagarism checks.
Formatting and Layout
- Setting up a book ready for publishing on Amazon KDP or Lulu or other similar self publishing companies (ebook or paperback);
- Creating a cover page;
- Applying consistent fonts, spacing, and margins
- Adding page numbers;
- Inserting section or page breaks;
- Generating a dynamic table of contents;
- Adding captions to charts, figures, and tables
- Checking uniformity of, for example, titles, capitalisation or captions.
- Free revisions for up to one month after completion of your formatted text. Output will be an MS Word or PDF document.
- It is not a graphic book design such as available on InDesign or other similar programmes, although I intend to offer this in the future.
Copy Editing
- Ensuring that the structure of the text flows smoothly and suggesting changes;
- Making or suggesting changes to vocabulary to improve clarity, pace, characterisation and dialogue;
- Adapting the tone of documents to suit an audience or purpose;
- Providing feedback and advice on writing style or content. Can it be improved without compromising their author’s ‘voice’?
- Improving focus and the text’s purpose or intended effect?
- Commenting on length or excessive padding/wordiness. Is the text appropriately concise?
- Checking spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence construction and paragraph structure;
- Ensuring that any chosen style guide is followed;
- Consistency and continuity throughout;
- Uniformity of – for example – capitalisation, spacing, paragraph structure, chapter breaks and page breaks;
- Referencing;
- Anything else that occurs to them.

What does it cost?
For calculation of cost purposes, I average around 8,000 words in an hour’s proofreading, copy editing or 3 in 1, depending on complexity and level of intervention required. Any breaks I take are excluded from the timing.

Developmental editing costs
Developmental editing costs are based on too many factors to give a straightforward list price. Contact me to discuss your needs and make an individual agreement.

I particularly want to support aspiring authors or students who can’t afford the usual costs. I have tried to price my services at a very reasonable rate which should be within everyone’s budget, but if you would struggle to pay these amounts, please contact me to see if we can come to some arrangement.
